Uncontested Divorce
It is possible to have an Amicable Divorce?
Jill offers a free 30-minute consultation to help you determine whether mediation or collaborative law would be appropriate for your situation.
The types of situation that would be appropriate for mediation or collaborative law might be called:
- Uncontested Divorce
- Amicable Divorce
- Friendly Divorce
- Simple Divorce
If you would describe your divorce in one of those ways, then mediation or collaborative law might work for you. Mediation and collaborative law are non-adversarial approaches that help people to reach resolutions that are fair for both of them.
If you and your spouse have decided to get divorced, but want to avoid the financial and emotional upheaval of a bitter, contested divorce, you are not alone. Although the very contentious divorces are the ones that make the news, many people seek a different path to dissolution of their marriage.
Jill Cohen is a family mediator and collaborative attorney located in Beverly Hills.

What is an Amicable Divorce or Friendly Divorce?
People enter marriage with the hope and belief that it will last forever. There may be disappointment and resentment when a marriage ends, but that does not mean you are enemies and that a divorce has to be nasty. It is possible to have an amicable or “friendly” divorce. What it takes to have an amicable or friendly divorce is two people who are willing and able to focus on their future instead of the past, and who want to find a solution that is best for both of them. With the guidance of a neutral mediator or two collaborative attorneys, they can identify the issues that need to be addressed, uncover what is important to each of them, and craft a solution that satisfies their needs.
What is a “Simple” Divorce?
Of course, divorce is a major life event with emotional significance for any couple. But for some couples, there are a limited number of decisions that need to be made in order to get a legal divorce. I have worked with a number of clients who do not have children, have limited marital assets and a strong desire to divorce with a minimum of time, money and emotional strain. Couples in this situation appreciate how mediation or collaborative law can make the legal divorce process smooth and simple.
